Whispers on the Dock-Evangeline Kelley Giveaway

About Whispers on the Dock: Three sisters. A charming inn. Hints of mystery and romance. And a gorgeous seaside setting. Escape to Misty Harbor Inn.

As Nantucket reaches the pinnacle of its summer glory, and the Marris sisters welcome guests at Misty Harbor Inn, youngest sister Sam Carter enters her mother's cobbler recipe in the Summerfest baking contest. But she faces a formidable opponent, a past winner who is determined to keep her title even if it means stooping to dirty tactics. Can Sam's newfound faith help her rise above the fray and reach out to this lonely woman? Meanwhile, an elderly guest arrives who knows the inn's history, and the sisters are stunned to learn that their late mother lived there as a child. But she told them she'd never been to Nantucket until her honeymoon! Through the woman's reminiscences and photos, the sisters make an intriguing discovery --- not only about the mysterious Hannah Montague, the young woman who disappeared from the house in 1880, but also about their own family history.

Readers will delight in the inviting Nantucket setting and be enthralled by the adventures of these sisters who reunite to bring their mother's Misty Harbor dreams to life.

My Review:

I didn't have a chance to read the first two books in The Postcards from Misty Harbor Inn series, which are Seaside Harmony and Sunflower Summer, but believe me, I have them on my Kindle and plan to read them soon.  I really loved this book.  I would suggest though, if you have the time to read the first two books as things that started in the other two books get resolved in this one.  Even though I haven't read the first two, I really wasn't that lost as to what was going on.  This is a story that sucks you in and makes you feel that you actually know the characters, it makes you care what happens to them.  Once I started reading, I really couldn't put it down.  There are so many things going on in this book.  I highly recommend this series, even though I have only read this book, but I know I will love the other two books.  I loved how each sister had something going on and they all had to realize they needed to sit back and relax and not stress and everything worked out fine.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.

A Home for Lydia

A Home for Lydia
Lovely Lydia Fisher may be an outspoken Amish woman, but she also desperately needs her job at the Plain Cabins at Pebble Creek. Though sparks fly at first between her and her new boss, when the cabins are robbed, nothing is more important to Aaron than making sure Lydia is safe.  Book 2 in The Pebble Creek Amish Series

My Review:

This is the second book in the Pebble Creek Amish series and this is a series that you really need to read in order, so I am glad that I read the first book in the series, A Promise for Miriam.  This book picks up where the first book left off, only it introduced new characters.  Lydia works at the Plain Cabins and Aaron comes from Indiana to take over for his uncle Ervin, who has passed away.  Aaron doesn't want to be there, but with help from the community he makes the Cabins a success.  In the mean time, he and Lydia realize they have feelings for each other.  Then there is a serious problem in the community and at the Cabins.  This book started a little slow, but soon picked up and I enjoyed reading about the lives of Gabe and Miriam again and being introduced to all the new characters.  Vannetta Chapman does such a great job, I feel like I know the characters personally.  Looking forward to the next book in this series, which in entitled A Wedding for Julia.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.

My Review:

Well, Teresa Trent has done it again.  I think this has been the best Betsy Livingston book yet.  I really enjoy visiting Betsy and all the great folks of Pecan Bayou, TX.  In Buzzkill, Betsy is marrying Leo and they have hired cranky Lenny Stokes and his wife, Martha, to do the flowers for the wedding.  When her aunt, Maggie, hires Mr. Andre to be her wedding planner, he decides to use someone else to do the flowers for the wedding.  When Betsy and Leo go to get their deposit back from Mr. Stokes, they find him dead from an apparent unfortunate attack by his bees.  But as Betsy and her father, Judd Kelsey, dig deeper they discover that Mr. Stokes was really murdered.  As if Betsy doesn't have enough on her plate, she accidently sends her estranged mother an invitation to her wedding, and she shows up, a month early, there is another wedding scheduled for the same day, and that bride seems to be out to get Betsy.  Then throw in another murder.  Will Betsy's wedding go off without a hitch?  This was a book that once I started reading, I couldn't hardly  put it down.  It was filled with so many pitfalls for Betsy, but she never lost her cool.  This book kept me gusssing till the very end, and what a surprising ending.  I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Buzzkill, it is great.  Wonderful job, Teresa.

Teresa Trent lives in Texas and loves writing about small town life. She first got the idea to create Pecan Bayou after visiting the Texas Hill Country to view the millions of springtime flowers alongside the roads and highways. The town of Pecan Bayou does not exist in Texas, but there is a body of water in the state with the name. Pecan Bayou does exist in Teresa’s imagination and heart. Buzzkill is the fourth book in the Pecan Bayou series featuring all of the crazy characters who live in this cozy little town in Texas.

Buzzkill Excerpt
“Okay now, let’s see.” Mr. Andre lowered his head, revealing the roots of his mousse-spiked, bleached hair. He wore a dark maroon suit with a matching jewel-toned silk shirt unbuttoned midway, showing sparse hair on his skinny chest. “Do you have a photographer?”
“Yes,” I ventured.
“No,” Aunt Maggie cut in. “She has some guy who shoots kiddie team pictures.”
“Oh my.” Andre circled something on his clipboard. “No photographer.”
“And you’ve gone for a wedding cake tasting?”
“A tasting? I think I already know what vanilla and chocolate tastes like by now.”
Andre shook his head as if I were a child. “No, my dear. You will be pleased to find out there are other flavors like white amaretto, champagne – girl, you can even get peanut butter if that’s what floats your boat. So I take it you haven’t had a cake-tasting session?”
“You would be correct,” I replied.
“I see.” He circled another line. “And your flowers?”
“She’s using Lenny Stokes, and she’s already put a deposit down,” Aunt Maggie said.
Andre grimaced.
“I see. I’ll need his number and address so I can get in contact with him to put him on my approved vendors list.” He circled another line. “And what is the venue?”
“We are going to have the ceremony at the community church.”
Andre’s eyebrows raised as he nodded and smiled. I had finally done something right.
“Do you have any kind of documentation on this?” he asked.
“Not officially, no,” I said. “I have talked to the pastor about it, though and he says it’s open. We live in a small town, Andre. Documentation isn’t always required.”
“Mr. Andre,” he corrected.
“We just don’t have the same kinds of waiting lists like there are in the big city.”
He clutched his hand to his chest. “Well, that’s a relief.”
“And your invitations?”
“We weren’t going to send those out until mid-January. We were afraid people would lose them. I have them ordered.” Mr. Andre’s eyes slanted toward me. “Well, they’re not exactly ordered, but I do have them picked out.”
A pause hung in the air as Mr. Andre summoned up the strength to go on. “Are you sure we’re planning a wedding and not some kind of country barbecue where they cook a pig over a spit?” He clasped his hands together in front of him to emphasize his point. “You are in crisis mode, Madame Happy Hinter.”
I gulped. So maybe, just maybe, I hadn’t nailed down enough of the details. I felt a tear escape onto my cheek. Andre, used to overwhelmed brides, reached over to a satin-covered tissue box and slapped it down on the table in front of me.
“Dry your eyes, sweetie. We’ve got work to do,” he said. “You should know what a lucky girl you are. I just removed myself from a wedding on the same day. No one – I repeat, no one – does a wedding like Mr. Andre, but even I have my limits on troublesome brides and monster mothers. As fate would have it, I’m yours.”
He walked over to a filing cabinet and pulled out a large white leather binder. Mr. Andre’s picture was on the front, and underneath that, “Weddings Exclusively by Mr. Andre” was embossed in gold lettering.
“I don’t care what religion you are,” he said. “This, lovey, is your new bible. Carry this with you everywhere and fill it with notes, questions, business cards, quotes and everything – I mean everything – that has to do with your wedding. Is that clear?”
“Yes, sir,” I said and saluted before I could stop myself. Aunt Maggie broke out into a laugh, but Mr. Andre turned quickly, fixing his eyes on her. She quickly stifled her reaction and stood up a little straighter, becoming just another draftee in the world of white satin.

In the Age of Graphic Storytelling Cozy Mysteries Still Doing Well
by Teresa Trent

In the Age of Graphic Storytelling Cozy Mysteries Still Doing Well
by Teresa Trent
When I started writing mysteries I knew that I wanted to have an element of romance in all of them because that is something a little extra I am happy to find in reading other people's mysteries. The romance should be a sub plot, but not overtake the mystery. In my latest mystery, Buzzkill, Betsy is getting married so there are romantic scenes, but first and foremost she must solve the mystery of the death of her florist and deal with all of the craziness in planning a wedding. I've only planned one wedding and funny how writing this book brought back my own Bridezilla memories.
One of the things that I was concerned when I first started thinking about publishing my writing was that many of the mysteries have some pretty explicit scenes both in the sex and violence areas. Could I actually write anything like that? These books are exciting to read, and I've read my share, but I have to admit that when they get to the gory parts I have to put them down. Whenever my husband and I watch horror movies on DVD, I always make sure I have a knitting project. That way I can look down whenever it gets too scary. My dogs never had so many sweaters.
The traditional structure of the cozy mystery is cozy-not realistic. If I'm going to write love scenes into my stories, then I'm going to emphasize romance and sweetness and I'm not going to emphasize sweaty bodies and bulging bosoms.
Of course one of the things that I worried about in writing cozy mysteries was that my books were not going to be as marketable as a 50 Shades of Gray or a realistic thriller. I was pleasantly surprised when I started getting comments and reviews from readers who specifically pointed out that they enjoyed books without any graphic sex, violence and strong profanity. What a relief! There are more of me out there! What I learned from this is that preferring something that is cozy, sweet or inspirational is not a bad thing. There are all kinds of different reading tastes out there from erotica to Grace Livingston Hill and cozy mysteries just fall on that spectrum. I'll admit I grew up watching movies like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Steel Magnolias, the old Miss Marple movies and even the television show Murder She Wrote. I wanted to live in that town and I wanted to know those characters. All you have to do is watch the evening news to know that life is gritty and graphic enough, so spending a little time in a cozy mystery can be a good place to come home to. I'll leave a pitcher of sweet tea on the porch and you won't need any craft projects for the scary parts.

My Review:

This was an awesome book that I couldn't hardly put down.  It kept my attention from the very beginning.  It was a great cozy and it kept me guessing up till the very end.  This is the first book in the Comfort Food Mystery Series and I am really looking forward to the next book in this series (there is an excerpt of it in this book and it sounds really good).  I really liked Trixie.  She was bound and determined to continue her aunt's  and uncle's legacy by keeping the Silver Bullet Diner successful.  She wouldn't give up even when hunky cop Ty Briscoe asked her to not interfere in the investigation.  This cozy is filled with quirky characters, and Ms. Wenger did such a great job that I feel like I know these characters personally.  There are also some yummy recipes in the back that I want to try.  Thank Christine for such a wonderful cozy mystery, I honestly can't wait for the next one.

About Christine Wenger
I have worked in the criminal justice field for more years than I care to remember! It seems like I was forever going to school while I was working full time, but in the end, I received a dual master’s degree in Probation and Parole Studies and Sociology from Fordham University.
Unfortunately, the knowledge gained from way too many years in night school, didn’t prepare me for what I love to do the most – writing romances and cozy mysteries.
MY FIRST BOOK My very first book, THE LADY AND THE COWBOY, a short, western historical, was written for beginning adult readers, and I sold it to Laubach Literacy. In 1998, it was chosen by the Publishers Liaison Committee of the Public Library Association’s Adult Lifelong Learning Section as one of the “Top Titles for Adult New Readers.” Yes!
“THE CALL FROM HARLEQUIN” One of my biggest thrills in life was receiving “the call” from Susan Litman at Harlequin (then Silhouette) Special Edition in January of 2004. She wanted to publish THE COWBOY WAY. Yeee-haw!
THE COWBOY WAY was released in January of 2005—a year later. Such a looong time to wait. Since then, I’ve written eight books (and counting!) for Harlequin. I love writing about cowboys out west and the southwest, far away from New York State where I live! These are my GOLD BUCKLE COWBOYS (You’ll fall in love with them in eight seconds!) I’ve also written two books set in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, The Hawkins Legacy.
COZY MYSTERIES A new venture for me (in 2013) is a series of “comfort food” cozy mysteries which I set in a small-town 1950’s diner, THE SILVER BULLET.
The first book, DO OR DINER, from Penguin/Obsidian books is scheduled for release on August 6, 2013. A second book will follow, A SECOND HELPING OF MURDER, in 2014, and a third, yet untitled, book will be scheduled after that.
JUST FOR FUN I enjoy watching professional bull riding and rodeo with my favorite cowboy, my husband Jim. We put on our cowboy regalia (I look horrible in a cowboy hat!) and have traveled to events in Las Vegas, Florida, Connecticut, and other states. As a result of our travels, I have met many genuine, personable and polite cowboys, and that’s how I get my inspiration for my westerns! Of course I have to do research for my comfort food diner series. That takes me to diners all over the U.S. and Canada (and maybe Europe and Asia!) for meals. It’s a tough job, but I just have to do it!

Suzanne Woods Fisher's The Letters

About The Letters:
Book one in Suzanne's brand new series; The Inn at Eagle Hill.

Rose Schrock is a plain woman with a simple plan. Determined to find a way to support her family and pay off her late husband's debts, she sets to work to convert the basement of her Amish farmhouse into an inn. While her family, especially her cranky mother-in-law, is unhappy with Rose's big idea, her friend and neighbor, Galen King, supports the decision and he helps with the conversion. As the first guest arrives and settles in, Rose is surprised to discover that her entire family is the one who receives the blessings, in the most unexpected ways. My Review:

Classic Suzanne Woods Fisher.  She told a great story filled with great characters, some new and some that I've met before.  Rose was such a strong character.  Even with all of her troubles she still relied on GOD and trusted that He would bring her through.  Rose decides to open an Inn at her mother-in-laws home.  When Delia, who has issues of her own, comes to the inn, Rose knows she is sent by GOD for a reason.  Galen is her neighbor and has feelings for her, but Rose is afraid to be in a relationship again.  Vera is Rose's mother-in-law and she is quite a character.  Delia has her estranged husband, Charles, to examine Vera, and through trust he helps Vera.  Then there are Rose's children, Bethany, Mim, Luke, and Sammy, the boys are quite a handful.  This book is sweet with a little humor in it.  I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone, especially someone who loves Amish Fiction.  Great job Suzanne.

My Review:

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fast read filled with very likable characters.  Even when Jim was confused he wasn't unlikable.  This is the story of Jim, who decided to leave home because of his father's strong hand.  He goes to the town of Newton, TN.  He has to lie about his age to get a job.  This book was very well written and Jim's struggles seem so real.  He has attracted the attention of two different women.  One is the boss' daughter, Caroline.  When she up and leaves and doesn't tell Jim why, he turns to Louisa the other girl.  All this happens during the Great Depression.  Jim and Louisa marry and have a daughter.  Around twenty years later, Jim and Caroline are reunited, will they rekindle the spark they had.  I felt that I knew the characters really well after reading this story.  This is also  a story that will stay with me long after I put it down.  I can't wait to read the next book in the Caney Creek series.  Great job Jo.

Courage to Change by Elizabeth Maddrey

Elizabeth Maddrey
HopeSprings Books
380 pp.
Romance
When Phil accepted Christ and stopped drinking, his hard-partying wife Brandi divorced him. Reeling and betrayed, he became convinced Christians should never remarry, and resolves to guard his heart. Allison Vasak has everything in her life under control, except her heart is irresistibly drawn to fellow attorney Phil Reid. As Phil and Allison work closely together to help a pregnant teen, Allison melts Phil’s defenses. But when Brandi discovers their relationship, she decides that though she doesn’t want him, no one else can have him. Can Phil and Allison’s love weather the chaos Brandi brings into their lives?

My Review:

This book started out really slow for me, but towards the middle it really picked up and I couldn't hardly put it down.  I just had to find out what happened next.  I had a lot going on in it.  There were several characters all with small plot lines of their own.  The major players were Allison and Phil.  Phil is divorced.  His hard partying wife left him after he found the Lord.  He doesn't think that divorced people should marry again, but he can't help his attraction to Allison.  Allison really likes Phil and can't understand how he can be interested one minute and not the next.  When they both try to help pregnant teenager, Lindsay, and her dad, Marcus, will things change for Phil and Allison.  Throw in Phil's crazy ex-wife, Brandi, causing all kinds of trouble, this turns into a thriller.  Will Brandi go too far?  I really did like this book once I got into it.  It wasn't a fast read at first, but towards the end you won't be able to put it down.  Great job Elizabeth.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.
