Silenced by the Surf

SilencedInTheSurf_TourBanner (1)
Welcome to my tour stop for Silenced in the Surf by Kate Dyer-Seeley! This is book three in the Pacific Northwest Mystery series and released March 29th, 2016.

The tour runs April 4-15 with reviews, interviews, guest posts and excerpts. Check out the tour page for the full schedule.

SILENCED coverAbout the Book:

Covering a windsurfing competition should have been a breeze for reporter Meg Reed, but with a killer in the curl, she's headed for rough waters…

Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge is the windsurfing capital of the world, and Meg is stoked to cover the King of the Hook event for Portland's Northwest Extreme magazine. Before the competition gets under way, Meg has a chance to try some windsurfing on her own. But when the current sweeps her downriver, she spots a body snagged on the rocks. The dead man is Justin Cruise, aka Cruise Control, a celebrity windsurfer and not exactly a nice guy. It's soon clear his death was no accident, and Cruise had no shortage of enemies. As Meg dives right in to discover who wiped out the windsurfer, she'll need to keep her balance--or she too may get blown away.

What I Thought:

I can relate to Meg, I am not much of an athlete my self, and he bumbles at trying the extreme sports that she writes about for Northwest Extreme Magazine are, at times, funny, and she usually ends up getting herself into some trouble. This installment was no different.  Meg is covering a windsurfing competition and, as usual she finds a body. This time the body of a not very likable celebrity windsurfer.  This was well written with a lot going one to keep a person occupied.  Keep up the good work Katie.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.

Delivering the Truth by Edith Maxwell

Delivering the Truth
(A Quaker Midwife Mystery)

Paperback: 312 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0738747521
E-Book ASIN: B019KKTWX6

Synopsis

Quaker midwife Rose Carroll hears secrets and keeps confidences as she attends births of the rich and poor alike in an 1888 Massachusetts mill town. When the town’s world-famed carriage industry is threatened by the work of an arsonist, and a carriage factory owner’s adult son is stabbed to death with Rose’s own knitting needle, she is drawn into solving the mystery. Things get dicey after the same owner’s mistress is also murdered, leaving her one-week-old baby without a mother. The Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier helps Rose by lending words of advice and support. While struggling with being less than the perfect Friend, Rose draws on her strengths as a counselor and problem solver to bring two murderers to justice before they destroy the town’s carriage industry and the people who run it.

What I Thought:

This was a very entertaining read.  I really enjoy reading Edith Maxwell's writing as it flows so well.  I enjoyed this story because I really like the main character.  Rose is a wonderful midwife.  When there is a fire that destroys some carriage factories and other buildings, the chief of police asks Rose to keep her ears open for him.  Then the son of one of the carriage factory owners if found dead.  The murder weapon turns out to be one of Rose's knitting needles.  Rose has to try to figure out the killer  because some people in the town are treating her a pariah, and she doesn't want to lose business.  The plot of this story is a very good one and it kept my attention throughout.  There are many suspects I was kept guessing till the very end.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.

The Detective and the Midwife

Top o’ the morning to you. My name is Kevin Donovan, and I’m the police detective right here in our bustling mill town of Amesbury, Massachusetts. We have our fair share of crime, but with some luck and some leg work, we usually get the culprit behind bars before too long.

We’ve had quite the spate of misdeeds lately, though, coming on the heels of what they’re calling the Great Blizzard of 1888. I daresay they’re much more than misdeeds, too. Why, a case of arson that burned down nearly all our world-famous carriage factories and killed a few men, to boot? That was a tragedy affecting the whole town. Along came a nosy midwife who thought she had a clue or two as to the firebug. Turns out she did, and I thanked her for apprehending the disturbed young man.

Worse was a murder, the body found on the rocks where the Powow River rushes over them downstream of the mills. Stabbed he, was, and I was obliged to call Miss Rose Carroll into the station about the murder weapon, which was one of her possessions. The silly young woman is one of those Quakers, always addressing me as Kevin instead of by my rightful title, and insisting I call her Rose. Well, my sainted mother would turn in her grave if I didn’t at least add a Miss onto the name.

And then, don’t you know, another citizen of our town met an untimely end a few days later. This victim was a poor young mother, whom Miss Rose had delivered of a bastard son only a week earlier. I worked both those cases as best I could, but I couldn’t manage to stop Miss Rose from conducting her own investigation on the side, much as I tried.

In truth, she can go places and hear secrets I’d never be privy to, spending time in ladies’ bed chambers while they are in the throes of childbirth as she does. Unfortunately, Miss Rose got herself and one of her pregnant ladies in quite a  pickle recently. But this midwife is both brave and clever, and somehow managed to turn the tables on her attacker shortly before my officers and I arrived.

I’ve reluctantly come to admire Miss Rose’s forthright manner and keen curiosity. Because she’s a member of the Society of Friends, she does talk in an odd manner, but she’s always honest and upstanding. I’ll accept bits of her help, as long as she stays out of trouble from now on.

Book blurb: For Quaker midwife Rose Carroll, life in Amesbury, Massachusetts, provides equal measures of joy and tribulation. She attends to the needs of mothers and newborns even as she mourns the recent death of her sister. Likewise, Rose enjoys the giddy feelings that come from being courted by a handsome doctor, but a suspicious fire and two murders leave her fearing for the well-being of her loved ones.
Driven by her desire for safety and justice, Rose Carroll begins asking questions related to the crimes. Consulting with her friends and neighbors―including the famous Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier―Rose draws on her strengths as a counselor and problem solver in trying to bring the perpetrators to light.

Braking for Bodies by Duffy Brown

Braking for Bodies:
A Cycle Path Mystery

Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0425268957
E-Book ASIN: B011IVP3ME

Synopsis

Evie Bloomfield puts the pedal to the metal—in the latest Cycle Path mystery from the national bestselling author of Geared for the Grave.
Moving from Los Angeles to small, picturesque Mackinac Island to work in a bike shop might seem crazy, but Evie knows it’s the best decision she’s ever made. That’s not to say she’s gotten rid of all her stress; after all, the upcoming Lilac Festival has everyone in town riding in circles.
But things really go downhill when a ferry full of tourists—including Evie’s friend Fiona’s former boss, the editor of a sleazy rag in LA—arrives on the island. No one knows why Peephole Perry came all the way to Mackinac, but things aren’t looking good for Fiona when Peep is found dead. Now Evie has to gear up and get a grip on the truth if she wants to clear her friend’s name…

What I Thought:

This is the second book in the Cycle Path Mystery Series.  It was just as good as the first, Geared for the Grave.  Duffy is such a great writer that the story flows so well.  I really love this series.  Evie is such a hoot.  She really gets herself into some troubling situations. She is trying to prove that her friend Fiona is not a murdered when Fiona's old boss from L.A. shows up on Mackinac and gets himself done in.  Throw in Evie and Nate planning Erma and Rudy's wedding, Evie has a lot on her plate and it is very interesting how she handles it all, let me just say, there was some laugh-out-loud moments.  I also love the setting of this book, Mackinac Island.  There are so many quirky citizens that make this series so interesting.  But I like Evie the best.  This one had a lot of twists and turns in it that kept me guessing till the very end, and let me tell you, the ending was a huge surprise.  It is also interesting to see where the relationship between Evie and Nate will go.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.

Hi Cozy Lovers...

Braking for Bodies, the second book in the Cycle Path Mysteries is set on Mackinac Island where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron. There are no cars, lots of horses, even more bikes and a dead body.

Not only is this a problem for the dead guy...who deserved to bite the big one...but for the businesses on the island. If word gets out that there’s a killer on the lose tourists will stampede for the ferry docks and leave!

To avoid financial catastrophe the locals pass the murder off as a mystery weekend at the Grand Hotel. The local police chief is not amused and tried to tell the tourist this is a real crime scene but they’re not buying it and isn’t that hunky policeman a great actor!

It’s hard enough to solve a murder but when the tourists are out to do the same thing and thinking this is all fun and games, mayhem goes right along with murder in a really big way.

So who is this guy that winds up dead right there in front of the Grand Hotel? It’s Peephole Perry all the way from LA and he’s a real piece of work. He got the name Peephole from sneaking around and getting the dirt on celebs in LA. He’d blackmail them and if they didn’t pay up he’d print the info in the Inside Scoop, a rag he owned and edited.

But want is the Peepster doing on Mackinac of all places? A get-away with his mistress? It might have worked if Peep’s wife didn’t show up. Maybe he’s after his fav reporter who lives there and she has the dirt on him and he needs to shut her up? Or maybe someone’s followed Peep all the way from LA and finally did the old sleazebag in?

Mackinac Island looks all calm and peaceful to the tourist but that’s just not the way it is at all. What calm and peaceful place have you visited? What was the thing you enjoyed most about it...or was it too peaceful?

Synopsis

Soup shop owner Lucky Jamieson stirs up more trouble in the latest mystery from the national bestselling author of Ladle to the Grave…
When Lucky Jamieson opens up By the Spoonful to host an event with a famous author, she’s not expecting a bunch of nuts to descend on her small-town soup shop. But the author’s exasperating entourage—from a prickly publicist to a snippy son and his tipsy wife—give fresh meaning to the phrase, too many cooks spoil the broth.
The evening is more than spoiled, however, when it ends with a homicide. When the manner of the murder—as well as another recent unsolved crime—echoes the author’s fiction, Police Chief Nate Edgerton realizes he has a copycat killer on his hands. And Lucky hopes that one of her regular customers who has mysteriously gone missing isn’t involved. Once again, the soup shop owner will need to stir up some clues to find her friend and catch a cunning killer—before things really take a tureen for the worse…

What I Thought:

I have read one other book in this series and I enjoyed it, but this one was great.  This one grabbed my attention form the beginning and kept it throughout.  There were so many twists and turns and so many suspects, I just could not put this book down because I needed to know what happened next. Of course, the writing was superb, the book flowed so well, and it was a very easy read.  I really liked how this group of friends came together to try to clear the name of a friend.  It would be great to have a group of friends like that.  Let me tell you, the ending was definitely not what I was expecting.  I like when a cozy totally throws me for a loop like that.  I will definetly be reading more in the Soup Lovers Myserty Series, even though I am really not a soup lover myself.

Synopsis

A little slice of Heaven on the Emerald Isle…
In the small village of Kilbane, County Cork, Ireland, Natalie’s Bistro has always been a warm and welcoming spot to visit with neighbors, enjoy some brown bread and tea, and get the local gossip. Nowadays twenty-two-year-old Siobhán O’Sullivan runs the family bistro named for her mother, along with her five siblings, after the death of their parents in a car crash almost a year ago.
It’s been a rough year for the O’Sullivans, but it’s about to get rougher. One morning, as they’re opening the bistro, they discover a man seated at a table, dressed in a suit as if for his own funeral, a pair of hot pink barber scissors protruding from his chest.
With the local garda suspecting the O’Sullivans, and their business in danger of being shunned–murder tends to spoil the appetite–it’s up to feisty redheaded Siobhán to solve the crime and save her beloved brood.
What I Thought:

This was a very interesting book.  I really like how it was written using a lot of authentic Irish speak, it even gives translations.  I totally butchered names till I read the translations.  When the brother of the fella that killed Siobhan's parents is found dead in the family bistro, Siobhan has to figure out who the killer is, especially since her brother is the main suspect.  There are a lot of suspects from the townspeople, some who are pretty close to Siobhan.  This one kept me turning the pages.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.
