Selling her corn fritters at a carnival, Deputy Donut CafĂ© owner Emily Westhill faces off against a murderer who doesn’t play fair . . .

Emily and her assistant, Nina, are looking forward to manning the Deputy Donut tent at the Faker’s Dozen Carnival in Fallingbrook, Wisconsin—a festival held on Friday the thirteenth to celebrate good and bad luck. But Emily has barely dropped the corn fritters in oil when bad luck boils up. First, their bucket of confectioner’s sugar disappears—and then while a mime creates a distraction, a magician robs their cash register.

After the carnival, their misfortune continues. Emily discovers that someone has broken into artist Nina’s loft and vandalized a large painting in progress with the bucket of stolen sugar, which is now on the head of the mime, who seems to have been suffocated. Emily would bet Nina was the intended victim, but the cops think Nina silenced the mime. Now Emily must catch the killer white-handed—before someone else kicks the bucket . . .

What I Thought:

This is the fifth in the Deputy Donut Mystery Series. I have not read all the books in this series but have read a few. This book starts out with Emily and her employee, Nina, at a the Faker's Dozen Carnival. This is a carnival that features both good and bad luck as it is held on Friday the 13th. The bad luck happens later that night when a Mime from the carnival is found in Nina's apartment where a bucket of powdered sugar that went missing from their booth at the Carnival is found on her head. Emily has to investigate to prove that Nina is not the one who "silenced" the Mime. This series has a great setting and great characters who show up in this book. Emily is a very likable protagonist and is relentless when she is trying to help solve a murder. There were twists and turns in this one that kept me guessing till the very end. I enjoyed the carnival setting in which this one started out. The plot was well thought out and he story flowed well, which made it a quick read. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.
